In no particular order, here are five of my personal favourites from the 2000s. All of the following movies, without a doubt, will leave you with your jaw dropped, your mind confused, or your heart melted.
1. The Skeleton Key (2005)
Celeb motivation: Kate Hudson
Do you believe in witchcraft? Caroline Ellis (Kate Hudson) is a 25-year old nurse who takes the job as an in-house caregiver. Although she must work at an isolated plantation, the job pays her a hefty $1,000 a week. She works for a woman named Violet to help care for her husband Ben. Ben is mute and fully paralyzed – but Ben is trying to tell Caroline something. Caroline soon discovers a haunting mystery behind the seemingly sweet couple she is working for.
2. Buried (2010)
Celeb motivation: Ryan Reynolds
One man. One location. One situation. Would you believe me if I said this movie is gravely intense? (pun intended). Paul (Ryan Reynolds) is a truck driver working in Iraq. He wakes up to find himself in a wooden box, unable to recall how he got there. He soon realizes he is buried six feet underground – his only hope of escape is through the three items given to him: a knife, a box of matches, and a cell phone.
3. Crash (2004)
Celeb motivation: All main characters
In Los Angeles, whites are learning how to co-exist with non-whites in this racially tense neighbourhood. Watch as the lives of several different families intertwine with one another revolving one event. Inspired by true events, Crash will give you a different perspective on the people surrounding you.
4. Disconnect (2012)
Celeb motivation: Jason Bateman, Max Thieriot
If you loved Crash, you’ll love Disconnect even more. If you haven’t seen Crash, watch Crash. Technology rules the modern world – and when secrets are exposed online, relationships form between the most unlikely people. How do people handle the consequences of their mistakes? What kind of technological mistake can initiate both love and death? After this movie, you’ll reconsider how your actions can affect someone you haven’t even met yet.
5. Snowpiercer (2013)
Celeb motivation: Chris Evans
All of humanity is wiped out from an ice age caused by an experiment that tried to counteract global warming. One massive train runs continuously around the globe to prevent it from freezing, as it houses the world’s only survivors. Spending less than ten minutes outside the train will result in death. Chris Evans (Captain America) plays Curtis, a man who leads a group of rebels from the back of the train towards the front. What they discover on the way will change their view of the world.
