Name: Himalayan Java
Location: 2552 Yonge St, Toronto, ON
This Nepalese inspired coffee house chain has nested its first Canadian location. The café is a twenty minute walk north from Yonge and Eglinton. Himalayan Java sells high quality coffee, while maintaining social responsibility. They offer organic and fair trade coffee produced in Nepal. I apologize to those adventurous coffee drinkers looking for yak’s milk in the coffee. The only Nepalese aspect about the array of coffee at Himalayan Java is that the coffee is sourced from Nepal.
The first thing I noticed is that the place is cozy. These tiny dark wooden tables are strategically placed so that the customer can view expert baristas preparing their order. The café is decorated with memorabilia of Nepal and references to Nepalese culture, like the Nepalese art on the side of the counter shown in the picture below.
We were greeted with a smile, ordered a latte, and sat down. The service was very quick and friendly. Within a couple minutes of chatting with my sister the barista arrived with our coffee. My goodness, the drinks were adorable! Look at them! I have a soft spot for latte art and cute animals, so this joint gets major plus points from me.
Here’s a closer look:
The characters were so cute I didn’t want to drink my latte in fear of ruining this Hello Kitty-esque masterpiece. But, I did. The latte was delicious, but nothing special. They don’t have a unique or distinct flavour, which is perfect if you’re not looking for a life changing experience from a latte. The latte is how a latte is supposed to be: a calming coffee to sip on while you’re chatting with your friend. Not the so called “latte” devoured in syrup and topped with a mountain of whip cream. It’s not coffee if it that tastes like I’m chugging a bottle of Aunt Jemima’s pancake syrup. An example is from a familiar franchise that so many people in Yonge and Eglinton flock to like pigeons after French fries. (The hint is below)
Now it’s time to stop throwing shade at this certain franchise and praise this coffee shop. Himalayan Java I salute you by raising my pinky finger while drinking your deliciously frothy latte. Whether you want a cup of coffee before you eat at the Thai restaurant next door or you just happen to be in the area, make sure to visit Himalayan Java.
