Halo- a game praised as being one of the best first-person shooters on any console- Is emerging with a new installment in late 2014. The game has generated a huge buzz from fans, who have been avidly playing Halo for nearly 15 years. For those who don’t know, Halo is a multi-billion dollar science fiction video game franchise developed originally by Bungie, and now by 343 Industries that defined Xbox and provided that push the Xbox needed, making it one of the biggest consoles in the world. The plot centers on an interstellar war between humanity and an aggressive group of aliens called the Covenant. Most installments follow the story of Master Chief, a Spartan created to defeat the Covenant. The Covenant are a race of incredibly fierce aliens that have their hearts set on using the Rings, or Halos, to carry out the genocide of humanity. The Covenant are comprised of mainly Grunts, Elites, Brutes, Jackals, Hunters, Drones, and many others.
Humanity is locked in a bloody battle as they attempt to destroy the Rings, with the Spartan Soldier Initiative being their very last hope. With five games following Master Chief’s story, there are countless spin offs and additions to the franchise such as Halo: Reach, Halo: ODST, Halo Wars, and many more. With a demanding fan base and a legacy to stay true to, Halo 5 has incredibly high expectations.
Halo 5: Guardians has released early cover art, which shows another Spartan standing alongside Master Chief. Many fans have theorized this to be Cortana or Palmer, previous friends of John-117, (Master Chief), but executive producer Josh Holmes spoke out, saying “He’s a new character”. Many rumors are flying, and many leaks have sprung up since the announcement. The creators are growing frustrated with the amount of leaked photos and content, and understandably so. With a sky high budget and the game’s unrivaled anticipation, it’s very difficult to prevent such problems.
As far as the fans know, the game picks up from where Halo 4 left off. Master Chief was left alone, having lost his best friend, he is questioning his actions, past and present, as well as questioning the authority of the UNSC. After Halo 4 revealed Master Chief’s background and story, fans are eagerly awaiting more. Finally, after nearly 15 years, we learned his name. Master Chief is a mysterious character, which the creators plan on expanding even more in Halo 5.
Halo 5 may be the last time we see Master Chief, and as a huge fan of the game myself, I am positively terrified. Master Chief is an iconic character in the video game world. Halo games were always known to sell Xbox 360 consoles. Since the Xbox One has been released, it has been selling fairly well without the help of any Halo games. Many believe that when Halo 5 is released, it will only marginally affect sales of either console, seeing as Halo 4 met the same fate. With each game’s huge budget, Microsoft may decide it is not worth putting out games that don’t sell consoles.
Hopefully we will see more Master Chief following Halo 5: Guardians. With all the excitement and hype surrounding the announcement of the release, I’m sure the game will live up to the high Halo standard- An outstanding campaign and a huge variety of multiplayer opportunities. After all, there is a TV show that is based on the game and is sporting huge names such as Steven Spielberg, set to be released in Fall 2015. As well as Forward Unto Dawn’s possible major movie deal, Halo is reaching new heights and seems to be only getting better with age.
